From the Archives – Golden-fronted Woodpecker
We will move past Iceland this week but land back on birds with one of my favorite bird images of all of the tens of thousands that I have made over the years. Golden-fronted Woodpeckers (Melanerpes aurifrons) are only found in about half of Texas, a sliver of Oklahoma, and a wide swath of México. This fellow was hanging out a San Angelo State Park near San Angelo, Texas, in the bird blind area. I have probably a few hundred images of Golden-fronted Woodpeckers, but what makes this shot for me s his pose, the fact his foot is in full display, and the fact you can see his tongue making contact with the sunflower seed. This guy was photographed in June 2008.
